How to fight well over a screen

Every repair signal you rely on in person — a hand, a look, a kettle being put on — is missing over a screen. What's left is words with no cushion, which is why long-distance arguments escalate so fast and end so badly. You need explicit substitutes for the things proximity used to do automatically.

The script

Lovelara, when we fight over video or text, it spirals — somebody hangs up, somebody goes silent, and we lose three days. Help me build a way to fight well across a screen:

1) Name the 3 specific failure modes of long-distance conflict (delayed text reads, no body language, the ability to hang up). For each, give me a counter-move.
2) Write a "pause script" — exactly what to say if either of us needs to step away — that doesn't feel like punishment.
3) Give me 4 ground rules to propose to him *before* the next fight, so we agree to them while calm.
4) Draft the repair message to send within 12 hours of any fight ending unresolved, no matter who was "right."
5) Tell me when to insist on video, when to switch to a voice note, and when to stop typing entirely.

When to use this

  • A text thread turned into a fight in under ten messages.
  • One of you goes quiet and the other spirals for hours.
  • You need rules you both agree to before the next one.
  • You want a way to end a fight that isn't hanging up.

What not to do

  • Don't fight in writing about anything that matters. Move to voice.
  • Don't end a call on a cliffhanger with no return time.
  • Don't let a timezone gap turn a pause into overnight punishment.

Common questions

Text, call or video?

Video first, voice second, text never for the substance. Text is fine for the repair afterwards.

What replaces a hug?

An explicit repair line you both know, plus a set time to reconnect. Predictability does the calming.

What if he won't get on a call?

Then name that as the issue rather than continuing the argument in the wrong medium.
