Signs You Should Not Get Back Together (and the Few That Say You Might)

An honest checklist for reconciliation: what predicts a second attempt working, what predicts a repeat, and the questions to answer before you say yes.

Two coffee cups on a cafe table with one chair empty in warm light.

Missing him is not a reason. It is a symptom of attachment, and attachment fires for people who were bad for you with exactly the same intensity as for people who were good for you.

So set that aside and run the actual test.

The reason to be careful: the cycling data

Research on cyclical relationships — Amber Vennum, Kale Monk and colleagues — consistently finds that couples who break up and renew report lower satisfaction, higher uncertainty about the future, and more conflict and abuse than couples who never cycled. Renewals also predicted worse outcomes when they carried into marriage.

That does not mean never. It means the default outcome of a repeat is a repeat, and beating it requires something specific.

Signs you should not

Nothing changed except the loneliness. Time apart is not a change; it is a pause.

The reason it ended is still unnamed. If neither of you can state the cause in one clear sentence, you cannot have fixed it.

You are reconciling to end the pain. You will get relief, then the same relationship, then a worse breakup.

The relationship ran on the Four Horsemen. Gottman's longitudinal research found criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling — especially contempt — strongly predict dissolution. Contempt does not evaporate during three months apart. See the Gottman method.

Your standards moved, not his behaviour. Notice if what you now describe as acceptable is simply less than what you asked for before.

There was coercive control. Isolation, monitoring, financial control, intimidation. This is a safety question, not a compatibility one — see coercive control and speak to a domestic-abuse service.

Every conversation about reconciling happens at night, or after drinking.

Signs it might genuinely work

A structural condition changed. The job, the city, the drinking, the ex, the untreated depression. Something in the world, not just in the sentiment.

He can describe your experience accurately — better than you expected. In Emotionally Focused Therapy terms, that is the signal a negative cycle has actually been seen rather than defended against. See EFT.

Repair attempts land now. Gottman's work found that the ability to accept a partner's repair attempt in conflict is one of the best predictors of stability. Test it in a small disagreement before you test it with your life.

Both people are doing individual work, not just relationship work.

You could walk away today and be okay. Reconciling from strength is a different act than reconciling from need.

The three questions to answer on paper

  1. What exactly ended this — in one sentence, no adjectives?
  2. What observable behaviour would prove that has changed, and over how many weeks?
  3. What is my line, and what will I do if it is crossed again?

If you cannot write question 3, you are not deciding — you are hoping.

A trial run, done properly

If you go ahead: no immediate moving back in, no full merge of friend groups, a named review date six to eight weeks out, and an agreement about what happens at that review. Slow is protective here.
