How to Start a Conversation With a Guy Over Text: 30 Openers That Work
Thirty text openers for a guy — from dating apps, from a number you just got, from a long silence — plus why hey never works and what to send instead.

"Hey" has roughly the same information content as a doorbell. He knows someone is there. He knows nothing about why, or what you want, or what he is supposed to do with it.
Every good opener passes one test: can he reply in under ten seconds without thinking hard, and does the reply naturally produce a second message? That is it. Everything below is just that test applied to different situations.
Openers for a guy you just met
"This is the person who argued with you about the best pizza in this city. I stand by it."
"Hi — proof I'm not a fake number. Also I looked up that band. You were right."
"Well that was a better Tuesday than expected. Nice meeting you."
"Okay I've been thinking about your dog story all night. I need the ending."
Dating app openers
Reference the profile. Always. Generic openers on apps are indistinguishable from bots.
"Your third photo raises more questions than it answers and I need all of them addressed."
"Between the hiking pic and the karaoke pic, I'm getting mixed messages. Which one's the lie?"
"You listed one thing on that profile that I have very strong opinions about. Guess which."
"Serious question: how much of that cooking claim is real?"
Openers when you already know him
"Random, but you popped into my head today and I decided that means you get a text."
"I need someone unreasonable to agree with me about something. You're up."
"How did the thing on Friday go? I've been curious."
"Saw this and it was so aggressively you that I had to send it."
Openers after a long silence
No apologies, no "I know it's been forever." Just warmth.
"Hi stranger. Something today reminded me of you."
"This is very out of nowhere but I hope you're doing well."
"Okay, three years later, I finally watched that film you wouldn't shut up about. You win."
Openers that give him something to do
These work because answering is fun rather than obligatory.
"Settle a debate: is a hot dog a sandwich? Your answer determines a lot."
"Rank these: airport bars, hotel bars, dive bars. Defend your first pick."
"I'm making a very serious list of underrated foods. Contribute or be judged."
"Two truths and a lie. Go. I'll go second."
What to send when the first reply is short
A short first reply is not rejection — it is a man who is busy or bad at texting. Give it one more real attempt with an actual question, not an escalation.
"Fair. What was the best part of it?"
"Okay but that's the summary. I want the version with details."
If the second one is also flat, stop. Two flat replies is information, and how to respond to dry texts explains what to do with it.
Common opener mistakes
- Opening with a status question. "What are you up to?" puts the work on him and produces "not much."
- Opening with an apology. "Sorry to bother you" frames you as an interruption.
- Opening with a paragraph. Length invites length; three sentences maximum on a cold start.
- Opening twice. One unanswered opener is a non-event. Two is a pattern he can feel.
Let Lovelara write the first one

Everything above is written against named, peer-reviewed clinical work rather than opinion.
- Carl Rogers found that accurate, non-judgmental reflection is itself the change agent — being understood precedes being able to shift. See Rogerian empathy.
- Salovey, Mayer and Goleman's work shows that naming an emotion precisely measurably reduces its intensity — affect labelling calms the alarm. See emotional intelligence.
- Seligman, Fredrickson and Gable & Reis found that how partners respond to each other's good news predicts satisfaction as strongly as how they handle conflict. See positive psychology.
